Exploring Lam Nguyen's artistic vision in greater depth.
My current work explores the scale and power of the natural world and humanity’s vulnerability within it. Drawing from Romanticism, I depict oceans, waterfalls, mountains, and other expansive landscapes as spaces that can inspire both awe and unease. I am interested in the moment when the scale of a landscape exceeds our ability to fully comprehend or control it.
I work primarily with oil paint and cold wax medium. Oil allows me to capture the fluidity and atmospheric qualities of the landscape, while cold wax introduces physical texture and a rougher material presence. Through variations in scale, surface, and texture, I emphasize the contrast between the human body and the environments we inhabit.
As my practice develops, I am beginning to combine painting and sculpture while introducing influences from Brutalist architecture. I am interested in the relationship between the monumental scale of natural formations, and the massive structures humans construct within the landscape. As natural environments are increasingly transformed by development, I consider how our understanding of scale, power, and permanence changes. By bringing Romantic landscape traditions into conversation with Brutalism, I explore the tension between the natural and constructed worlds and question where humanity locates itself between them.
